9 Things you need in your bedroom

They say you spend a third of your life in your bed. You may sleep, scroll through your phone and watch the latest blockbusters in the comfort of your bed. Which is why you need to create a relaxing atmosphere in your bedroom. A place that is your escape and is a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Here are a few things to add in your bedroom to make it a safe haven.

Quality mattress

A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for anything. This Irish proverb is a clear indication of why you need to invest in a good mattress.

You’ll spend hours reading, typing and sleeping on your bed, so you need to make sure you find a quality mattress which is soft and firm. Before you buy your mattress, stretch out on it and test it for 15 minutes to see if it’s comfortable and worth investing in. The bed should have a comfortable feel as well as a firm support structure.

If you have a medical condition, such as back pain, ask your doctor to give you recommendations for a type of mattress you should purchase to ease the tension and pain when you’re lying down.

You should also check the warranty. A quality bed will have a maximum warranty of up to ten years.

Adjustable beds

You shouldn’t only focus on the mattress, you should make sure you buy an adjustable bed so you can sit or sleep in the position which will give you the best support. Movable beds are perfect for when you want to change positions or when you’re playing video games or watching TV. Adjustable beds have health benefits too, they help ease muscle and back pain.

Invest in a silk duvet cover

Silk is a luxury material you should invest in. It’ll make you want to crawl into bed each night. It not only gives your room an expensive look, it has other benefits as well. Silk helps prevent those dreaded wrinkles, eases different skin conditions and keeps your hair frizz-free.

All silks aren’t made equal. If you invest in a 100% quality silk duvet cover, you’ll be able to wash it in your machine instead of taking it to the dry cleaner.

Cushy rug

Have you ever woken up in the morning all groggy from a deep sleep and then your feet hit a cold hard surface, instantly bringing a shock to your system? You should make the whole experience in the morning a bit more pleasant and invest in a fuzzy rug. This way, when your feet hit the floor each morning, you don’t feel discomfort. You should choose a dark or beige colour so it doesn’t get dirty quickly.

A place to sit

You should have a couch in your bedroom for those times when you want to read or have a friend over.

Ban the TV

Keep your TV in the lounge area and out of the bedroom. Binge watching a couple of episodes of your favourite series each night will keep you up. The bright light produced by the TV screen suppresses the production of melatonin, causing you to have trouble sleeping at night.

Bedside Table

When you start to nod off at night after reading a book or using your laptop, the last thing you want to do is get out of bed to switch off the light. A bedside table is perfect for placing a side lamp, which is more convenient than getting out of bed to turn off the light. You could also place other items on the bedside table, such as your water bottle, cell phone and books.

A full-length mirror

Every bedroom needs a full-length mirror. Placing a mirror in your bedroom has many benefits besides for checking your appearance. If your bedroom is small, having a full-length mirror will open it up and make it appear bigger than it is.

Keep your room fresh

Your bedroom should have a pleasant scent. You should open the windows in your bedroom so cool air can come in and clean out the bin regularly. Keep your room smelling fresh by choosing a spray from the Airoma Essence range.

You should also wash the sheets regularly, especially if you sleep with pets. When we sleep, we perspire and body oils and skin particles stay on the sheets. This could make your sheets give off a bad smell.

A bedroom is a place we should make an effort to decorate because it’s the one place where we spend most of our time.
