Bathrooms don’t always have the best associations due to their function being both a hygienic solution and issue. But it can still be a beautiful room in your home if you spend a little time, effort and money on the interior décor aspect of it.
You don’t need to remodel your entire bathroom to make it modern or give it a new look and feel. There are many affordable ways to decorate your bathroom and make it refreshing room in the house. And the best place to start is by cleaning and organising the bathroom as it is before you make any changes. Then you can see what would be the better décor additions.
Something to hang
Paintings, mirrors, shelves, curtains, lights – anything that can be hung has the potential to be a great décor addition to your bathroom. You’re going to need a mirror in the bathroom anyway so try to find a large one that can be a standout feature in the room. And, because it’s so big, it will reflect any other décor items you have around the bathroom. Mirrors also have a way of making a room feel bigger than it is. So, if your bathroom is on the smaller side, this one item could make a noticeable difference.
Bathroom curtains are another great hanging décor item that can create a theme for your bathroom. Bathroom sets with bathroom curtains are a quick, easy and affordable way to add a consistent pop of colour throughout the entire bathroom.
Hanging lights above the sink and bathroom cabinet or shelf is another easy way to add something interesting and stylish to your bathroom. And they don’t need to be functional bathroom lights if you already have a set light fitting. They can be purely for decorative purposes with those filament bulbs that have interesting patterns on the inside and give off a copper glow.
Sense of smell
Wet towels, dirty laundry and drains don’t make for the most appealing aromatic sensation. You can always stick with your air freshener but there are ways to achieve pleasant smells and décor at the same time.
Scented candles are a popular go-to for bathrooms. They create a mood, and come in a variety of beautiful colours and scents. You can create a calming bathroom environment with subtle colour hues scattered along the shelves, stands and window sills of the room. The only thing about candles, however, is that you need to be aware of when they’ve been lit and when they need to be blown out. Unless, of course, you have a candle in a protective (and decorative) candle holder that will prevent any flammable accidents from occurring.
If you’re still not too sure about the risk posed by candles, you could also opt for an atmosphere diffuser with a bowl of scented oils and sticks. The item itself if a subtle (more modern) addition to the room but the scent is strong throughout the bathroom.
Tiles on the wall
If you want something interesting to reflect in your new, oversized mirror or be the feature of the bathroom, you should consider adding patterned tiles to the wall. Small patterned tiles have been an interior décor trend for a while now for both kitchens and bathrooms and are such a simple addition with a big difference.
You could be sitting with a plain white bathroom that suddenly has a strip of colour, design and life on the wall. The way to go about sticking tiles to the wall is to choose a strip of about four to five rows of tiles. Obviously, this depends on the size of the wall you have to work with and the size of the tiles you choose. Alternatively, you could choose one feature wall to cover in tiles completely. This will work out more expensive but can be the only décor you add to the room and it will be enough.
A potted plant or two
People underestimate the value of greenery in the home. Every single room in the house can benefit from an indoor plant for fresh air, relaxation and, of course, decoration. Plants literally bring life into a room and their naturally bright colour make it a substantial décor option.
You could have a mini potted plant or two along the window sill. Succulents are usually a popular option because of their low maintenance and unique features. Depending on the size of your bathroom, you could even have a large fern or other indoor plants to put in the corner. This décor item will require you to take care of it but, if you do, you won’t ever need to pay more money to replace it.
A fresh coat of paint
If your décor budget is very small, the least you could do for your bathroom (that will still make a big difference) is lay on a fresh coat of paint. No matter how clean you keep your bathroom walls, there’s no denying the difference fresh paint can make to them.
It’s a rejuvenating decorative act to paint your walls and it’s also an opportunity to add a bit of colour and change the scheme of the bathroom altogether.
