Whether or not to have a child is a big decision to make. And it’s one of the most important choices you’ll ever have to face. It’s something that will completely change your entire life and how you live it. Nothing will ever be the same again. That’s why you need to decide if you’re really ready for this huge commitment. Here are four statements that need to be true if you’re planning to have a child.
You’re financially stable
This is a big one. Children are little human beings that need to be fed, schooled, clothed, housed and entertained. For at least 18 years. That’s a huge financial commitment. You need to make sure you’re able to afford everything your child needs and more. If you’re finding it difficult to make it through the month at the moment, having a child is going to be extremely hard. You want your child to have all the best things in life, don’t you? The last thing you want is to have to struggle through life and have your child struggle along with you.
You’re emotionally stable
Children need love and attention. And you’ve got to make sure you that to give to them. You can’t be consumed in your own drama. It’s important that you’re not going through a rough patch in your life when you have a child. Simply being pregnant is enough of an emotional rollercoaster. It’s not all shopping for maternity underwear and baby clothes. You’re going to be going through a lot.
You know what you want out of life
By now you should have at least a vague idea of what you want out of your future. Where you want to be career-wise in ten years, where you want to live and who you want around you. You don’t have to have a detailed life plan with every step written down, but you do have to have to an idea of what you want and what you don’t want. That way you can be sure you actually want a child.
You know who you are
To put it plainly, you’re not going to have time to “find yourself” when you have a child. You’re not going to be able to discover who you really are. That has to happen before you have a child. You should know what you enjoy, what you don’t like, what you’re interested in and what bores you. You need to be a complete person when you have a child.
