Shopping for your daughter’s first bra is an important milestone. She’ll likely remember the event for the rest of her life, so it is important that it’s a good experience.
It can be difficult to know when the time is right for her first bra. She may hate the idea and avoid it for as long as possible, or she may desperately want one, especially if her friends are already wearing bras. The average age to start wearing a bra is 11, but can range between 9- and 14-years-old.
We’ve compiled a few tips to make improve your experience:
Take her with you
This may seem obvious to ensure you buy the correct size. But many moms choose to buy a bra and then surprise their daughter with it. Going together makes sure you have a conversation about her changing body and everything which goes along with that. It ensures an opportunity for a meaningful conversation and quality time together.
Get her properly measured
She may not like the idea of a stranger touching her – who does – so why not measure her at home? Simply measure her back at band level in inches and if the number is even, add four inches. If it’s odd, add five. This is the band size. Next, wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of the breast. This is the bust size. Now subtract the band size from the bust size. A one inch difference is an A cup, a two inch difference is a B cup, and so on.
Let her choose
To make her feel comfortable with the experience, she should be able to choose the style she likes best. Go to a dedicated underwear shop or to a store with a separate ladies underwear section so she’ll feel comfortable. She’ll likely choose something simple, probably a crop top or sports bra style. Ask her what her friends are wearing as she’ll probably want something similar.
Remember, this experience is about making your daughter feel comfortable in her body. This period of her life is confusing enough as it is, do everything you can to make this a good memory.
