Cleaning methods for different type of shoes

October 27, 2015

Shoes, shoes, shoes and more shoes! Whoever said owning too many shoes is madness, clearly can’t see the beauty in a pair of stylish Armani’s or Louis Vuitton’s. Whether you love the feel of a pair of sneakers or the gleam of a patent leather heel, there is no denying that when it comes to cleaning your beloveds, there is a bit of worry that you might ruin them. Our shoe maestro gave the best advice for cleaning your gems.

Leather shoes

Cleaning leather is the easiest of the lot. Remove the laces and get a soft brush to go over the entire shoe surface to remove dust and dirt. Then use a commercial leather shoe cleaner to clean the leather. This product is available at most shoe retailers. Use a clean, soft cloth to apply the polish in a circular motion across the entire shoe. When you’re finished, take another clean soft cloth and remove the polish in a circular motion.

Suede shoes

Go over the shoes with a clean towel or a suede brush, by only running it down in one direction. It will raise the nap and also help remove access dirt on the shoes. Once you’re done brushing go over the any bad spots with a suede eraser.

For water marks – Wet the entire shoe down with a damp rag, wipe off any excess water off with a sponge, stuff the insides of the shoe with newspaper so they retain their shape, allow the shoes to dry slowly in an area without sunlight or direct heat, and finally, once dry, brush them in one direction with a suede brush to restore the nap. Then apply suede protector to your shoes after cleaning.

Satin shoes

To remove dust and dirt, put a nylon stocking over your hand and wipe shoes off in a circular motion. Satin, ladies shoes needs extra attention; you will need to then spray it down with sparkling water.

For a deep clean – fill a large mixing bowl with cool water and gently mix in a couple tablespoons of gentle dish soap, submerge a shoe and allow it to soak for five minutes. Then gently scrub it down as with the softest bristled brush you can find. After scrubbing, rinse the shoes with cool water to remove soap. To keep the shape of the shoe, stuff the inside with paper towels, and then put them somewhere to dry, out of the sun.

Our shoes are the covering of our feet that should provide comfort and style for those days when we need to look our best. Your outfit may be on point, but if your shoes are not, then you might as well be wearing a black bag.
