Courses you can study without a Matric certificate

Not having a Matric exemption may seem like a daunting prospect to those who wish to further their studies. You may feel as though you are unable to find a career or are limited in what you can study, but there are options to help you further both of these. Outlined below are just some of the courses you can study without a Matric.

Stock controller

A stock controller is someone who is responsible for tracking incoming and outgoing shipments for companies. You will be tasked with creating inventory lists of every item that enters and exits the stockroom of your company, as well as forecasting supply and demand to prevent overstocking and running out-of-stock.

You will also be tasked with drawing up audit reports on stock and are responsible for stock that goes missing or is damaged. Good communication skills are vital for dealing with vendors, clients and your internal team.

As a bookkeeper, you will be responsible for managing the financial records of a company. You will be tasked with maintaining these records, establishing accounts, posting transactions and ensuring legal requirements are complied with.

For bookkeeping, you will need to be financially minded and have an analytical thought process. Some of the other responsibilities this position includes are maintaining general ledgers, keeping historical financial records accurately updated, preparing reports and defining the bookkeeping policies of a company.

Business manager

Business managers are tasked with overseeing the tasks and day-to-day operations of employees in businesses and companies. In a smaller company, a business manager will likely be in charge of general operations, whereas in a larger company, they will be in charge of a specific sector.

You may be asked to help the HR department with the hiring, training and evaluation of new employees, so you will need to have people skills. The responsibility of drawing up budgets may fall to you too, as well as preparing reports for senior management and ensuring that the company follows policies correctly and complies with all legal requirements for the industry.

Beauty therapist

Beauty therapists are creative and vibrant people, but this does not mean that the role comes without responsibilities. Your role involves therapeutic body care, including a strong understanding of key body systems, skin biology, anatomy and cosmetic chemistry.

As a beauty therapist, you will use a range of highly specific equipment and products, and will report to the salon and spa manager. For this position, you will need to have a passion for beauty and a friendly demeanour when dealing with people. A beauty therapist is also able to open their own salon once they have gained experience in the industry.

Office administrator

Office assistants handle organisational tasks, such as answering phone calls, coordinating diaries, setting up meetings and organising files. They are often called upon to help out with the day-to-day running of the office, so will need to be diplomatic in their dealings with people.

As an office administrator you may be asked to greet clients on their way to meetings, so your appearance is important. You will also be asked to update paperwork as necessary and to communicate with the other employees in the office. If you do not have the computer skills needed for this, the course you take for your office administration certificate will offer this training as part of the course.

Systems engineer

In today’s modern world of ever-evolving technology, some of the scarce skills that are lacking include computer network experts and systems engineers. In the position of a systems engineer, you will be responsible for analysing and designing systems for companies, correcting software issues and improve performance overall.

You may also be asked to draw up progress and specification reports for senior employees, maintain the payroll software and oversee the training of other IT department staff. For this role, you will need to have computer knowledge or, at least, an interest in learning more about the information technology industry.

Not having a Matric certificate does not mean you cannot further your education. Many institutions allow you to take bridging courses and there is the option of studying through correspondence in order to gain a Matric certificate, no matter your age. There are numerous possibilities open to you once you have discovered what your passion is and where your interests lie.
