How to celebrate your birthday when you’re broke

happy birthday 2It’s true that some people don’t enjoy their birthdays. But there are far more people out there who actually want to acknowledge the anniversary of their birth and celebrate how far they’ve come. The problem is that sometimes you simply can’t afford the massive party you want.

So, here are a few ideas of things you can do to enjoy your birthday with friends without spending loads of cash.

Host a movie night  – Grab all your favourite John Hughes movies and invite your best friends over for a night of popcorn and DVDs. It may seem simple and not exactly special enough to be a celebration. But, while you and your mates are lying all over the lounge suites and laughing your heads off, it will feel like a great way to spend your birthday.

Host a potluck Inviting people over for a dinner party can cost quite a bit of cash and takes a lot of effort. A potluck, on the other hand is way cheaper and easier. Everyone brings their favourite dish and all you need to supply is a bit of booze, the cutlery and your own signature dish. And, if you’re lucky, your friends will take their dirty dishes home with them and you won’t be stuck washing up for ages.

Plan a picnic – If your birthday falls on a sunny day, why not plan a picnic in a pretty setting. It’s simple to plan and everyone brings their own picnic basket. It’s a great way to get some fresh air as well enjoy the benefits of a free venue. Just pack some yummy food, a few blankets and pillows, and invite your favourite people.

Go on a hike – Okay, so yes, it’s technically exercise. But you can make a party out of a hike. Pack a delicious breakfast, put on some comfy sneakers, and set as soon as the sun starts rising. You may wonder why you thought it was a good idea while you’re on the way up, but enjoying some yummy food with the stunning view from Lion’s Head will make everything worth it.

Just because you’re broke doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your birthday. These are just some of the fun things you can do to celebrate when you’re running low on cash.
