“Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.” – Gore Vidal
You can always spot someone who has their own distinct fashion style. Sometimes it’s not even so much about what they wear, but how they wear it. You know that if you were to try on that very same ensemble it just wouldn’t look quite the same. That is because you can’t try steal someone else’s style and pass it off as your own.
Think you don’t have your own unique dress style? That’s just not true. You might just not know yet what it is. Here are a few tips to help you define the look that screams YOU.
Assess your lifestyle
A person’s dress style can be very much linked to their lifestyle. If you love skateboarding and BMXing then there is a good chance that will be naturally reflected in your personal style. Similarly, if being outdoors and in nature is something close to your heart, then your signature dress style probably won’t be stilettos and pencil skirts.
So if you want to figure out what your style is, it is a good first step to evaluate your lifestyle – how do you like to spend your time?
There aren’t fixed rules here though. Just because you are a skater girl doesn’t mean that you can only dress a certain way, though you might want to incorporate some of those elements into your day-to-day fashion choices.
Who are your style icons?
Is there anyone’s style that you admire? If there isn’t anyone you can think of off the top of your head then you can browse fashion blog and magazines to see what grabs you the most. The aim here is of course to find your own unique style, but understanding what you admire in others can help you move in the right direction.
Know your body type
At the end of the day, whatever your unique style is you want it to look good on you. As we all know, we are all born beautifully different. For you to know your style you should also know your body and what looks good on you specifically. If you don’t wear what looks good for your body type, then it might look like you are trying to appropriate someone else’s style, rather than developing your own brand.
Have signature pieces
One good way to put out your personal style is to have certain signature pieces. It could be a flamboyant hat that people learn to recognise as yours. It could be a collection of rings you never leave the house without. Perhaps it could be a particular style of handbags that you are known for.
How do you find a signature piece? Find something that strikes a chord with you, even if others don’t understand it at first.
Finding your own personal fashion style is about getting to know yourself, being connected with the essence of who you are and not being afraid to show it to the world.
