How to work harder and not smarter

The hustle and bustle of work might leave you feeling anxious. You may feel like you have too much work and little time to do it. You could feel the the need to consume energy drinks and pull all nighters in order to get your work done. But you don’t need to work harder, you need to work smarter. Working smarter will help you save time and be more productive and efficient at work.

Here are simple ways to help you work smarter.

Start with what’s important

The longer you leave something, the harder it becomes. Do the most important tasks first. It’ll help you feel less overwhelmed and more in control of your day. If you leave the hardest task until the end you might not have the energy to successfully complete it. You should plan out your day the night before and decide which tasks are the most important.

Ask for help

You need to ask for help whether you’re a student who is studying an HR management course or you’re an entrepreneur who has a lot of responsibility. Getting assistance will take the load and pressure off your shoulders. For example, if you’re a student and you’re failing a subject you could find it takes you longer to study but if you join a study group it’ll help you be more efficient and productive, causing your marks to improve.

Take time out in nature

Nature provides the perfect relief from the hustle and bustle of work. Being out in nature will have a calming effect and will help you destress. You could do something as simple a gor for a walk in order to disconnect from your work. Being outside will help you relax and lead to more productivity. It’ll also help you brain unwind and recharge so when you get back to work you’re more focused and ready to work.

Take breaks

If you want to work smarter you need to take regular breaks when you’re working. Your brain is only able to stay focused for 90 to 120 minutes so you need to take a 15-minute break and unplug. It’ll also help you perform better, concentrate more and be more creative. If you work for long periods without giving your brain a break you’ll be less focused more prone to mistakes.

Find your own cycle

People are more productive at different times of the day. For example, if you know you have more energy and are more efficient in the morning then you should use this time wisely, don’t spend it scrolling through social media. You need to find the time of day which you’re at your most productive and maximise it to it’s fullest.

Sleep

Getting enough sleep will help you be more productive and help you concentrate. If you don’t get enough sleep each night you’ll be tired the next day and won’t be on top form. Sleep is not only a necessity but it’s beneficial in helping you work smarter and to have more energy to perform tasks at work.

Don’t be afraid to say no

Don’t bite off  more than you can chew. If you already have a busy schedule and you add other commitments to your plate you’ll end up overwhelmed. Learning to say no can help you work harder on your tasks at hand. Focus on doing things where you’ll create value instead of just agreeing to do everything. Don’t focus on too many things at once otherwise, you’ll burn out. Keep your to-do list short so you’ll be able to meet all your goals. Be realistic about your schedule,

Avoid multi-tasking

Your productivity will increase when you focus on one task at a time instead of doing multiple tasks a time. You should also switch off your phone when you need to get things done. Constant messages and emails will interrupt you and distract you from the work at hand. Keep focused and don’t let other things grab your attention.

Organise your desk

Make sure your workspace is neat and organised so you can work efficiently. Being disorganised could lead to time-wasting because you’ll spend time trying to find your paperwork. But if you know where everything is, you’ll feel more in control and be more efficient.

Working smarter will help you meet deadlines and be more productive at work. Taking breaks, being out in nature and sleeping are all ingredients that come into play when you want to work smarter. Choosing to work smarter will make you succeed at work and make you happier.
