New year, new bedroom

December 23, 2016

The new year is around the corner. With a new year comes new resolutions. Most of us have resolutions such as exercise more, reach more targets at work and go travelling. The truth is that we spend a lot of time in our bedrooms which makes this room a very personal space. If you think about it, you spend hours in your room studying, watching series and contemplating life, love, and everything in between. Your bedroom deserves a bit of TLC. Start 2017 by making one of your new year’s resolutions giving your bedroom a well-deserved makeover.

  1. Clean out old clothes

Start by unpacking all your clothes onto your bed. Go through each item and pack them into three piles keep, throw out and donate. Keep clothing items that you have worn in the last three months and which hold sentimental value. Throw out clothes that have holes or marks on them which cannot be fixed with a bit of needle and thread and a good wash. Donate clothes you have not worn in the past six months, don’t fit anymore or items that are no longer in fashion and you know you will never wear.

  1. Give your room a theme

By giving your room a certain theme it will simplify the makeover process. When thinking of a theme think of the colour palette you would like to go for first and then items which represent your personality. Try and pick a neutral colour which most furniture and linen will go with. For an example, if your favourite colour is lilac and you want this incorporated into your theme then what you would do is keep your room neutral and fill the small spaces with lilac. The way you could do this is have a statement bedside light which is lilac, a lavender scented candle and a lilac picture frame.

  1. Have your carpets professionally cleaned

When was the last time you had your carpets properly cleaned? If you can’t remember the answer, it is about time you got cleaners in. You will be surprised at how much dust and dirt accumulates in your bedroom carpets. If you want to extend the life of your carpet, it is important to have it professionally cleaned at least once a year.

  1. Paint walls

Although this might sound like a hectic task to do, if you are giving your bedroom a full makeover then it is only right to paint your walls too. Painting your walls will remove all the stains and marks and give the room a new look and feel. There’s no better way to freshen up a room than with a fresh new coat of paint. Go to your local hardware store and get a few samples first before painting. Once you have chosen a  colour which matches your theme, get a professional painter in to assist.

  1. Bookcase

When last have you been through your bookcase? If it has been five years since you matriculated and your textbooks are still on the case then it is time to do a book spring clean. Pass on old school and university books and notepads, donate books which you have no interest in reading and pack away any books with sentimental value. Fill this space with a few new books and magazines.

  1.  New bedding.

If your bedding has been passed down to you or if it still has Walt Disney print on it, then it is time to buy new bedding. If you are wondering where to buy new bedding, spend a bit of time online and you will find an array of online stores which you can order from. Make sure you buy the right size bedding and that the quality will last a long time. Cotton is the most popular fabric used to make sheets and other bedding, and for good reason. It’s durable, breathable, soft, easy to care for, and reasonably affordable.

  1. Indoor plant

Not only are indoor plants super trendy right now but they also add an earthy feel to your bedroom. Go to your local nursery and look in the indoor plant section for a fern or succulent. Choose a plant that suits your lifestyle. For example, if you often travel for work, you are going to want an indoor plant that only needs to be watered about once a week. Ask the assistants at the nursery about how much water and sunlight your indoor plant will need.

  1. Go shopping

Make a list of all the items you need to buy to finish off your room’s makeover. This might include a new mirror, scatter cushions, candles, and new books. Having a list will keep you focused on the items that are needed and the budget you are working with. Shop around and compare prices. Keep the slips in your purse so that if the items do not fit your room’s theme you can return them.

Start your 2017 off with a new bedroom. Not only will you start the year feeling refreshed, but you’ll be ready to take on the next year with a stylish, modern space.
