Outfit ideas for a Valentine’s Day date

February 22, 2019

Valentine’s Day is a special time for many of us. We arrange romantic dates for our partners (or potential partners) and get dressed up for the special occasion. There is even a special question involved for some, along with a sparkly piece of jewellery. But, it can be difficult to decide on what to wear for a date during the month of love, especially when met with the choice of clothing stores when shopping in Cape Town.

You can shop at several large malls in Cape Town such as the Canal Walk shopping centre and others. These shopping malls in Cape Town provide a unique array of fashion outlets, but this does not make choosing an outfit any easier. You will need to consider all of the different factors when looking for the perfect outfit, such as location, weather and vibe. So, in order to look your absolute best for this special date, read on below for some top outfit ideas.

Romantic red

It might seem like a cliché to wear red on Valentine’s Day, but there is no denying that it is the perfect colour for a date on this particular day. You can go all out and wear a red dress with matching red shoes, or you could tone it down with a burgundy pussy-bow blouse and charcoal slacks.

It is important to think about the location of your date because wearing a sleeveless red mini dress to an outdoor movie might be a little uncomfortable and cold. If you will be outdoors, such as at the Galileo Open Air Theatre in Century City, you should wear clothes that are comfortable to sit in but still elegant. For example, you could wear a deep red blouse with coral trousers as a nod to the monotone trend or a red maxi skirt with a white tank top for a more traditional Valentine’s Day colour combination.

Lovely lace

Lace is a fabric that is traditionally thought of as being soft and romantic. You might think of it as being “only for weddings” but it can be worn to other special occasions too. Look for a lace dress in an off-white or cream for a chic aesthetic, or opt for a lace blouse in a jewel tone to pair with black or dove grey trousers.

If you want to look ladylike and sophisticated, you could opt for a knee-length lace dress with long sleeves and pair it with kitten heels. Choose a dress in a pastel colour if you are going to a more casual restaurant, but opt for dramatic colours for a fancier location. You could also look for a lace jacket to pair with a blouse or dress for a more subtle touch of this floaty, feminine fabric. If the evening is cooler, you could pair your lace dress with a denim jacket to add some visual interest to your outfit.

The LBD (little black dress)

Now, there is nothing more classic than dressing up for a date in an LBD (or little black dress). It is a tried and true outfit for almost any date, but it can also be spruced up for something extra special. And Valentine’s Day often calls for a special outfit that oozes style and sophistication.

You could opt for a flattering figure-hugging dress if you have an hourglass figure and pair it with a pair of dark red shoes and a red lip for understated flair. Or, if you enjoy standing out, wear a frilly, flirty number with brightly coloured jewellery. However, if your date is more casual, you can pair a mid-length LBD with some comfortable pumps or even sneakers. Black dresses with delicate patterns or lace additions are ideal for dates that take you to glamorous locations, such as a waterfront restaurant or a trendy bar.

Beautiful blush

Another colour that is ideal for a Valentine’s Day date is a blush pink or dusty rose. While this colour is feminine and romantic, it is also stylish and chic. You could wear a chiffon blush pink dress with black or charcoal strappy heels for a truly ethereal feel or, if you are not a fan of dresses, pair a dusty rose button-down shirt with white trousers.

Blush pink is a pale colour, so if you have very pale skin it might not be the best idea to wear a dress in this colour, but to rather make it an accent colour for your outfit. For example, you could wear a blush jacket over a black shirt or dress for a girly touch. Or you could add it in a more subtle manner with a pair of heels in a dusty rose hue. It could also be worn on your lips and cheeks to enhance your natural beauty.
