Underwear questions you need to know but are too embarrassed to ask

December 14, 2017

When it comes to underwear, there’s a lot more to them than what meets the eye. While it may seem pretty obvious, many people are faced with questions about their underwear choice. We agree that some of them are too awkward to ask out loud, so in that case, we’ve got you covered:

  • How bad is it to wear the same underwear twice in a row?

If you’ve skipped a laundry day and are forced to wear the same pair of underwear twice, do not panic. It is not as bad as you would think it is and it is not as harmful to your health. However, on a normal day, remember that the moisture builds up and could cause a yeast infection. If you sweat a lot and your underwear is not cotton, you should consider washing it in the basin or shower with normal body soap to avoid it from smelling the second day around. But the good news is that it will not affect your health.

The next time you do some online shopping, remember that you can never have too much underwear. Try to purchase panties online in bulk so that you can avoid having to wear the same panties twice in a row.

  • Does fabric really matter?

Of course, it does! There is a variety of different underwear designs which are certainly great for specific outfits, but for your everyday life, it is advised that you wear a loose fitting cotton pair of panties. For your health, try to avoid wearing tight underwear that is lace, a thong or nylon. These fabrics are known to make your vagina sweaty, which in turn can give you a urinary tract infection or a bacterial infection.

  • Can you work out in a thong?

Working out with a thong is not advised. All the friction and heat can cause serious implications, which can ascend into the uterus and cause pelvic inflammatory disease. Do some research before you put those babies on and sweat it out in them. The long-term effects are not worth it.

  • When should I go commando?

Some people feel absolutely at ease not wearing underwear every day of their lives. While that may be comfortable, there are also negative effects linked to that. Especially from external viruses and bacteria that may affect your lady parts. When you sleep or work out, avoid wearing underwear as it could lead to a yeast infection. With tight clothing, underwear is also not necessary, but it ultimately comes down to your own personal preference. If you do wear underwear in both of these situations, make sure it’s cotton.

  • Do panties have an expiry date?

An expiry date, no, but a time to toss, yes. When it comes to panties, we all have our favourite pairs. However, when your underwear starts showing signs of fraying, holes or period stains, it is time to toss them. Panties can also become uncomfortable when your underwear becomes stretched out. These little factors can all be hazardous to your health as the elastic can cause skin chafing which may lead to vaginal irritation.

  • Is there a specific way to wash my panties?

A good rule of thumb is to read the label to see what your washing options are. Most cotton panties can be tossed in with your other washing whereas other more delicate pieces need to be hand washed. Whatever you do, wash your underwear with chemical-free detergent as the perfume can sometimes irritate your skin. Wash your underwear with the right chemicals to avoid them from wearing out.

  • What do the stains mean?

When you see or smell something that is different to your usual stains or odour, then do monitor it. You do not have to get up close and personal with your stain but keeping a close eye is important. Your lady parts can tell you an awful lot about your health and whether things are working properly down there. So, if you are experiencing discharge, pain and blood, it is recommended that you go commando while sleeping for a while to monitor your symptoms.

The bottom line

The older you get, the more you realise that choosing underwear is not only about the look but more about the fabric and health implications for your body. Why wear something that looks fabulous but constantly causes rashes, yeast or other bacterial infections? The bottom line is to buy panties that keep your vagina healthy. Keep your underwear clean, dry and fresh. It is fine to go commando at the gym as well as when you’re sleeping. Even during the day if you want to. As long as you’re keeping your skin clean and your clothing form-fitting and dry, you’re doing your lady parts a world of good.
